Summer-like temperatures heating up Lawrence

Storms moving in Wednesday night, Thursday

Take advantage of today’s sunny skies and warm temperatures while they last — cooler and wetter weather is on the way, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“Make sure you enjoy it because there’s a big change on the horizon,” Schack said. “This could be one of the last days we have in the mid-80s.”

At 8:07 a.m., there were some patches of dense fog in low-lying areas and the visibility at Lawrence Municipal Airport was down to a quarter of a mile, Schack said. But the fog was expected to burn off by 9 a.m., she said. Lawrence’s temperature was 46 degrees, the humidity was 97 percent and winds were calm as the sun was rising in a cloudless sky.

“If it feels like a fall morning, it’s going to feel like a summer afternoon,” Schack said. “We’re heading up to 85 degrees today . . . We won’t be too far away from the record high of 87 set in 1953.”

Normal temperatures for this date are 48 degrees for a low and 70 degrees for a high, she said.

“I think we’ll have all sunshine today. It looks like a beautiful day,” she said.

Lawrence’s temperature will fall overnight to a low of 58 degrees by early Wednesday morning, she said. Then, about 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., a cold front will sweep in, bringing clouds and the possibility of strong storms Wednesday night and heavy rain on Thursday, Schack said.

Wednesday’s high temperature will climb to 75 degrees. The chance for rain increases overnight Wednesday into Thursday, she said. The National Weather Service says the chances for thunderstorms are 20 percent Wednesday and 60 percent Wednesday night.

Overnight Wednesday, the low will drop to 55 degrees by early Thursday morning.

Thursday’s high temperature will struggle to get up to 59 degrees, with mostly rainy conditions throughout the day, Schack said. The National Weather Service says the chances for showers are 60 percent on Thursday and 40 percent on Thursday night.
