Some sororities concerned about safety over KU’s new parking lot restriction

About 120 Kansas University sorority members must park their cars at Memorial Stadium and walk to their homes on West Campus Road.

It’s a trek that some say can be scary, particularly at night. And the situation has some students and others scrambling to find a way to make the women feel safe.

“We’re looking at really any and every idea to help solve this problem,” Marynell Jones, student body vice president, said.

The students, members of Chi Omega, Sigma Kappa and Gamma Phi Beta, once parked in the lot at Joseph R. Pearson Hall because there weren’t enough spaces at their houses. But the university changed its rules this summer and now restricts parking there between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.

The students who once parked at the JRP lot now park at the stadium.

Donna Hultine, director of KU’s parking services, said Provost David Shulenburger would like to add some sidewalks, check lighting levels and clear brush in the path that students take from the stadium lot to the sorority houses.

“It’s just a matter of feeling safe,” said Christina Strubbe, president of the Panhellenic Assn.

Jones said students were working with university administrators on ways to ensure students walking from the stadium lot to their houses were safe and felt safe.
