Topeka ? Kerry Gamble had a school-record 287 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries Saturday, leading Hutchinson to a 24-7 victory over Olathe East in the Class 6A state-championship game.

Gamble scored on a five-yard run in the first half and put Olathe East (12-1) away with a 45-yard touchdown gallop late in the third quarter. Hutchinson junior quarterback Wes Kimmel added 153 rushing yards and a one-yard touchdown on 25 carries.

“We knew we had to do it on the front line and do the rest in the backfield,” Gamble said. “Wes did a good job of getting them off of me a little bit and opening holes for me.”

Hutchinson (12-1) put the clamps on Olathe East offensive stars Derek Miller and Dee Bell, who had accounted for nearly 3,500 yards coming into the game.

Miller, the Hawks’ senior quarterback, passed for 152 yards, but was just 12-of-26 and was picked off four times, all in the first half.

East’s lone touchdown came with 3:30 left in the first half on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Miller to Dorain Williams.

Salina Central 29, Blue Valley 21

Emporia – Jake Sharp rushed for 263 yards and four touchdowns as Salina Central beat Blue Valley for the Class 5A state title.

Sharp scored on runs of 33, 38, 52 and 20 yards to help Salina Central (13-0) to a 29-13 lead midway through the third quarter.

Blue Valley (11-1) pulled within 29-21 on Zach Rampy’s two-yard TD run but wasn’t able to score on its final two possessions.

Salina Central won its third state championship in five years.

Holton 28, Ulysses 27, 2OT

Salina – Matt Brock deflected a two-point conversion attempt to give Holton a double-overtime victory over Ulysses in the Class 4A championship game.

Holton (14-0) won its second 4A title in three years.

Ulysses (12-2) had scored on a 10-yard pass from Johnny Sosa to Tyler Parks, and coach Jason Kenny decided to go for the win.

“We were confident that we were going to make it,” Kenny said, “and we just came up a little short.”

Southeast-Saline 30, Silver Lake 28

Topeka – Justin Schropp scored on a 12-yard run to cap a 17-play drive that gave Southeast-Saline the Class 3A championship.

Silver Lake (13-1), state runner-up for the fourth straight season, went three-and-out on its final possession, and Southeast-Saline ran off the last 10 plays of the game. Silver Lake had taken a 28-24 lead on Kyle Steele’s 14-yard run.

Schropp threw an 11-yard TD pass to help SE-Saline (13-1) take a 16-0 lead after the first quarter.

Smith Center 36, Pittsburg-Colgan 16

Hays – Kerby Rice rushed for 120 yards and four touchdowns as Smith Center won the 2-1A title. Rice scored on runs of six, six, three and 14 yards, and Taylor Jones rushed for 136 yards for Smith Center (14-0). Jones also caught a 14-yard TD pass from Joe Windscheffel as the Redmen ran their winning streak to 28 games.

Jeff Smith was 7-of-15 for 101 yards passing for Pittsburg-Colgan (12-1).

Smith Center won its second straight state title and fifth for head coach Roger Barta.
