Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate the unsolved killing of a 77-year-old man found dead nearly seven months ago in his home near Lecompton.

But investigators still are not releasing any details of what they know about the death of Clarence David Boose, the retired former owner of David’s Jewelers in Topeka.

Boose’s 50-year-old son, Mark, said he has talked with investigators at least once a week, but that they have asked him not to divulge any details about the killing.

“I wish I could say more, but it’s too important,” Mark Boose said.

As of Tuesday, the sheriff’s office had followed about 180 leads, up from 150 in July, and five deputies were still assigned to the case. The department is following leads regionwide, Lt. Doug Woods, a department spokesman, said this week.

Neighbors described Boose as friendly and skilled at restoring cars and musical instruments. An acquaintance called police April 29 after finding him dead that day inside his ranch-style home at 194 N. 2190 Road. After an autopsy, the death was ruled a homicide.

During the summer, the killing was a regular source of conversation at Kroeger’s Country Meats, 505 Eisenhower Memorial Drive, a popular Lecompton gathering spot.

“Not anymore,” employee Robin Kofford said. “It’s hush-hush, big time.”
