Size was the name of the game for the sixth- and seventh-grade Tigers against the Blue Devils on Nov. 14.

The Tigers used their height advantage to beat the Blue Devils 42-26 in the third round of the preseason Hoopster tournament at the East Lawrence Center.

The Tigers spread their offense around the court, with four different players scoring more than six points.

Tigers forward A.J. Gilbert used his speed to score a team-high 12 points. Gilbert was able to get out on fast breaks off outlet passes to score open baskets. He was also able to score in traffic.

Forward Johnny McDermott tallied eight points in his team’s victory. He used a turnaround jumper on the baseline to knock down shots. The combination of McDermott and Gilbert hooked up on long, crosscourt passes out of the backcourt.

The Blue Devils struggled throughout the night because of a lack of depth. The scoring ran through one player, point guard Logan Henrichs.

Henrichs scored a game-high 15 points. He was the biggest scoring threat on the court with his ability to slice though the lane and score acrobatic lay-ups. Henrichs wasn’t afraid to throw up an occasional long-range bomb. He hit two three-point shots to help boost his scoring stats.

Blue Devils forward Madeline Brungardt used her lanky frame to her advantage. Brungardt used her long arms to block out down low. Brungardt’s ability to block out allowed her to pull down offensive rebounds for easy put-backs. Height also helped Brungardt on the defensive side of the ball, as she was able to block four shots.

The Tigers used a steady, consistent offensive attack to build their lead throughout the ballgame. Their lead extended by at least three additional points in each quarter.

With the win, the Tigers advanced in the preseason tournament to face off against the Yellow Jackets.
