Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 15, 1905: There was a well-attended meeting of the Associated Charities group last night in the office of Poor Commissioner Green at the courthouse. J.D. Faxon was voted president and the Rev. W.B. Hutchinson vice president. . . . Turkeys for the Thanksgiving dinner will cost 20 cents a pound and it is possible they will touch an even higher figure. This the highest price most can recall and last year the prices were no more than 18 cents a pound. Turkey growers say the weather this year has been very unfavorable and that costs have been much higher. . . . Lawrence does not have any contagious diseases at this time. Surrounding towns are full of one thing and another, but Lawrence seems clean. That last word probably accounts for our good fortune. The town has been kept in prime condition and the result is good sanitation. . . . The committee in charge of erecting a monument to Dr. Richard Cordley has given the contract to M.H. Rice of Kansas City. The monument is a handsome one.
