Israeli troops kill senior Hamas militant

? Israeli troops killed a senior Hamas militant in an arrest raid on Monday, touching off threats of revenge from the Islamic group.

The violence raised tensions as dignitaries from around the world gathered in Israel to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

Troops arrived at the home of Amjad Hanawi, 34, the commander of Hamas’ armed wing in the northern West Bank, early Monday, according to Palestinian witnesses and the Israeli military.

The Israeli military said seven of Hanawi’s assistants surrendered, but he came out of his house shooting, so troops returned fire.

A high-ranking Israeli military official said Israel did not have Hamas as a group within its sights, but would go after individuals it determined to be a danger to Israel.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak for the record, said the military decided to act against Hanawi because he had been involved in attacks against Israel since 1996 and recently has been helping to build a cell of militants in Nablus.
