Concert to benefit church’s restoration

St. Luke AME Church will raise money for its restoration project during an event Sunday at the Hobbs Taylor Lofts, 730 N.H.

The event, which runs from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., will feature the jazz and gospel music of saxophonist Robert Watson Sr. Suggested donation is $20 at the door.

Organizations that promote historical preservation will be on hand with information. They include the African American Families Oral History Project, Black Jack Battlefield Preservation, East Lawrence Neighborhood Assn., Historic Resources Commission, Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau, Lawrence Preservation Alliance, Lawrence Branch NAACP, Richard Allen Cultural Center, Spencer Research Library and the Western Star Lodge.

The church building, at 900 N.Y., has been nominated for the National Register of Historic Places and is raising funds for structural rehabilitation.
