Wichita ? The season ended for the Veritas Christian football team Tuesday night in a 58-38 loss to Wichita Word of Life in the semifinals of the Kansas Christian Athletic Assn. state playoffs.

Veritas ended its second season of varsity football with a 6-3 record.

“We had a great season,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said. “Our guys fought hard and never gave up. They battled all night, and all season long.”

Just glancing at the score, it looks as if Word of Life rolled to the easy 20-point victory. However, Veritas had the ball, trailing by only six points with just over two minutes remaining in the game. On third-and-five, the Eagles were called for having 12 men on the field, pushing them back into a third-and-10 situation. On the next play, Veritas turned the ball over, leading to a quick Word of Life score.

Another turnover moments later was followed by another Word of Life score, securing the 20-point margin.

“We had three turnovers which all really hurt us,” Bennett said. “They really made the game look like it was a lot more one-sided than it actually was.”

The final score may not have been close, but the offensive stats were. Word of Life had 492 yards of total offense, and Veritas had 490.

Jesse Schultz rushed for 225 of them, averaging 8.65 yards on his team-high 26 carries. He also had two touchdowns, including a 45-yard run in the first quarter.

Casey Woods passed for two touchdowns and ran for another. He was 11-for-18 for 175 yards through the air, but did throw two costly interceptions.
