2 women face endangerment, drug charges

Two Lawrence women face drug and child-endangerment charges following a weekend raid in a residential neighborhood in northern Lawrence.

Lawrence Police arrested the women Sunday after serving a search warrant at a duplex at 4005 Overland Drive. Sgt. Dan Ward said officers found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in the home and took three children – ages 12, 7 and 5 – into protective custody.

Ward said police believed the children were in danger because of the potential access to drugs and because of the condition of the home.

Kelly M. Martin, 24, and Mary Diane Reed, 31, have been charged in Douglas County District Court with possession of narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia and three counts each of child endangerment, according to court records.

Lawrence police arrest two women for possession of methamphetamine over the weekend after executing a search warrant on a home located at 4005 Overland Drive. Officers took three children into protective custody, allegedly after seeing conditions inside the residence.

Both were later released from jail on $1,500 bond.

Ward said reports didn’t make clear the exact relationship between the children and the women. The children were later released to a family member of one of the women, he said.

Martin, reached at the home on Tuesday, identified herself as the children’s nanny. She said the children were in good hands.

“The kids were never in danger,” she said. “They were well-taken care of. They’re bathed. They’re clothed. They’re dressed.”

She said she couldn’t talk about more facts of the case because of the pending charges.
