Free State can’t rally, loses, 2-1

? It probably was appropriate that a one-goal loss ended Free State High’s girls soccer season as the seventh-seeded Firebirds fell, 2-1, Tuesday at No. 2 Manhattan.

“This game was emblematic of our season: Mistakes at the wrong time and our inability to convert at key moments led to one-goal losses,” FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said.

Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Firebirds (2-14-1) fought back to 2-1 when Jenni Brooks converted a penalty kick with about 25 minutes to play. But Free State couldn’t score the equalizer.

“We had more opportunities late in the second half, but ran out of time,” Pendleton said. “We were knocking on the door and creating chances, but couldn’t convert.

“It was a tough season and a tough loss for our seniors, Claire Wilkinson and Nicki Riggins. It’s a positive sign that we return all but two players next year.”
