Douglas-County Fire & Medical firefighters work to extinguish a fire Monday afternoon at a vacant house new Peterson Road and Monterey Way.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical and Wakarusa Township fire units were called to the scene near Monterey Way and Peterson Drive at around 4:15 p.m.

Lawrence Fire Marshal Rich Barr says a permitted brush fire near the house got out of control and spread to the home.

Barr says the house was scheduled for demolition to make way for future development.

Barr expects the remaining structure to be demolished in the next couple of days.
