Rained out of their regular-season finale Thursday, baseball players from Free State High and Lawrence High cannot meet again unless it’s in the Class 6A state tournament May 27-28 at Hoglund Ballpark.

Free State (16-3) earned the No. 2 seed in the Class 6A sub-state and will meet No. 7 seed Leavenworth, a team the Firebirds flogged, 13-3, last week, at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the FSHS diamond.

The other game at Free State will start at 2 p.m. Thursday and pit No. 3 seed Topeka High against No. 6 Emporia at 2 p.m. Thursday’s winners will collide at 7 p.m. for the right to go to the state meet.

Meanwhile, Lawrence High (8-11) drew the No. 5 seed in the sub-state and will travel to Manhattan on Tuesday to take on No. 4 seed Washburn Rural at 2 p.m. Top-seeded Manhattan (18-2) will tangle with No. 8 seed Junction City in the 4:30 p.m. game. Tuesday’s two winners will meet at 7 p.m. with a state trip on the line.

Softball

As expected, the Free State and Lawrence High softball teams will meet in a first-round sub-state game. They’re scheduled to clash at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Washburn Rural.
