Used car among graduation prizes

Marsha Buhler won’t go so far as to say it’s a bribe.

But one lucky high school graduate will win a 1997 Cavalier, thanks to Crown Chevrolet and Project Graduation.

High school graduates who attend Project Graduation will have a chance to win this 1997 Cavalier.

“It’s a great way to encourage kids to come to a drug- and alcohol-free place after graduation,” Buhler said.

The Project Graduation event will take place Sunday night after Lawrence High School and Free State High School graduation ceremonies, but Buhler said students graduating from any school in Lawrence were welcome to come.

“I think most kids just want to be with their friends, so we’ve provided a place for them,” Buhler said. “And they like the prizes.”

About $8,000 in donated prizes will be given away, including gift certificates, CDs, TVs and cash.

“This year, it’s mostly cash prizes,” Buhler said. “We want every kid to get something if they can.”

More than half of the graduating seniors attended Project Graduation last year.

The festivities will include music, dancing, karaoke, basketball and other games. The celebration is from 10 p.m. Sunday to 3 a.m. Monday at Abe & Jake’s Landing, 8 E. Sixth St. Admission is free.

Sponsors in addition to Crown Chevrolet include the Lawrence Journal-World.
