Free heart test pays off for Bonner Springs man

The moral of this short story is don’t pass up a freebie.

Last February Roger Miller, a Bonner Springs pharmacist, went to Dr. Steven Rovenstine’s open house. Visitors were offered free electrocardiograms, and the cardiologist reading Miller’s EKG results said “the test showed some irregularities.”

That was an understatement. A later cardiac catheterization showed three severe blockages in Miller’s heart. The potentially deadly condition had gone undetected in an EKG Miller had in 2004.

Miller, 71, having canceled his European travel plans for May, checked into Olathe Medical Center on Friday for heart surgery — a triple bypass.

Miller, the new president of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, said he hoped the heart doctors would perform “a little magic of their own.”
