4-H and FCE News

The April 11 meeting of the Lone Star 4-H Club was called to order by Grant Metsker, president. The flag salute was led by Haley Parker. Becca Hinshaw, Michael Krumm and Callie Fishburn led the club in singing. Members answered roll call by stating their middle names. Libby Queen read the minutes of the previous meeting. Mary Berg gave the community leaders’ report. She announced the club would have an exchange meeting with the Four Leaf Clover 4-H Club. Kimbreley Davis, Douglas County 4-H agent, has given the club an opportunity to create a promotion card for itself. The deadline for Douglas County Free Fair entries is June 30. Megan Williams was initiated into the club. Marla Metsker gave a parliamentary report on how to address the president and division of a question in a motion. Grant Metsker gave a current event about robot use in hospitals.

The May meeting of Kanwaka 4-H Club was called to order by Alex Price, junior president. Members answered roll call by telling their mother’s “middle” name in honor of Mother’s Day. The club sang “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” The flag salute was lead by Jenn Crawford and Shon Price. It was announced that the Douglas County 4-H Council has purchased Kansas 4-H cookbooks celebrating 100 years of 4-H. Books may be ordered from any council member. The county council and club members served 137 people at the April 30 Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen meal. Several club members will attend the Bromelsick service at 10 a.m. May 28. Members will meet in June to work on the banner and scarecrow projects for the Douglas County Free Fair. Grace Oliver gave a reading called “Cremated Sam Magee.” Members played tag before refreshments were served by the Simpson family. The next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. June 13 at Kanwaka Hall.

The Vinland Family and Community Education unit will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Vinland Methodist Church. Elizabeth Hemphill will give the lesson “Color Me Healthy.” Freida Martin will be hostess.
