Museum director to speak at graduation

Saralyn Reece Hardy, director of the Spencer Museum of Art, will speak at the Kansas City Art Institute’s commencement at 2 p.m. Saturday at Community Christian Church, 4601 Main St.

Hardy received the National Endowment for the Arts Distinguished Service Award in 2001 and the Kansas Governor’s Art Award for arts advocate in 1995.

The art institute is a private, independent four-year college of fine art and design. It awards bachelor of fine arts degrees with majors in art history, ceramics, design, fiber, illustration, interdisciplinary arts, new media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and studio art with an emphasis on creative writing.

J-W senior editor to speak at conference

Journal-World senior editor Bill Snead, chief UPI photographer in Saigon from 1967 to 1969 and later photo editor of the Washington Post, will present “Picturing War” at a conference at the Eisenhower Center May 27 in Abilene.

The Vietnam War, World War II and Korean War will be discussed at the conference, featuring newsreels from the collections of the Eisenhower Library shown in the Visitors Center auditorium from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Registration is noon-1:30 p.m.

The program is sponsored by the Eisenhower Center and the Eisenhower Foundation. All presentations during the afternoon are free and open to the public.

Unity Art Gallery looking for entries

Unity Art Gallery, 900 Madeline Lane, is looking for entries for its show “Black and White.” It will feature a variety of media, including pencil, ink, etchings, prints, charcoal and photography.

The entry deadline is June 4. The show will run June 18-Aug. 6.

Entries must include title, medium, name of piece, dimensions and price.

KC Singers to present Americana concert

The Kansas City Singers will present “Americana: Sea to Shining Sea” at 8 p.m. May 27-28 and 2 p.m. May 29 at the Just Off Broadway Theater, 3051 Central, Kansas City, Mo.

A gala grand opening featuring a silent auction benefit for the Friends of the Kaw will be 7 p.m. May 27.

“Americana: Sea to Shining Sea” is the final concert in the Kansas City Singers’ Americana Series. It is filled with music and stories about the American land.

Lawrence residents Cynthia Walker and Richard Walker are scheduled to perform at the event.

Tickets for grand opening are $35. Black tie is optional. Reservations are required.

Tickets for Saturday and Sunday are $18 at the door, $15 in advance. Advance tickets are available at www.KCSingers.org.
