KSU history

To the editor:

I was very surprised to learn that Gary Bedore does not know about pre-1954 KSU.

When I arrived at Kansas University as a freshman in 1946, the last line of the alma mater we sang at sports events was “Hail to KSU!” It remained that way as long as I was in school at KU. It changed when Kansas State changed from Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences to Kansas State University in 1953 or 1954. At that time, our chancellor, Franklin Murphy, changed the name of our institution from University of Kansas to THE University of Kansas.

And we stopped singing, “Hail to KSU!”
