FSHS baseball, softball prevail

? Free State High’s baseball team staged a furious comeback Tuesday, beating Olathe East, 6-3, thanks in part to a three-run seventh inning.

The Firebirds trailed 3-1 heading into the sixth inning, but adjusted and surged ahead late. They improved to 14-2 on the season.

“It speaks well to the kids’ ability to battle and adjust to the pitching,” FSHS coach Mike Hill said. “We saw two very, very good pitchers. That’s one of the ways you beat good pitching — by persevering.”

Jake Hoover picked up the win in relief of Max Ellenbecker. Together, the two FSHS pitchers combined to strike out seven, walk just two and allow one earned run.

Free State will play Leavenworth on Thursday at home.
