Olathe ? Free State High’s baseball team staged a furious comeback Tuesday, beating Olathe East, 6-3, thanks in part to a three-run seventh inning.

The Firebirds trailed 3-1 heading into the sixth inning, but adjusted and surged ahead late. They improved to 14-2 on the season.

“It speaks well to the kids’ ability to battle and adjust to the pitching,” FSHS coach Mike Hill said. “We saw two very, very good pitchers. That’s one of the ways you beat good pitching — by persevering.”

Jake Hoover picked up the win in relief of Max Ellenbecker. Together, the two FSHS pitchers combined to strike out seven, walk just two and allow one earned run.

Free State will play Leavenworth on Thursday at home.

Softball

Overland Park — Free State High’s softball team swept Shawnee Mission South, 7-3 and 7-0, Tuesday.

In the first game, Jamie Stanclift and Allie Hoch went 3-for-4, while Kaylee Lane was 2-for-4. Ashley Wagner was the winning pitcher, improving to 3-3.

Free State pounded 16 hits in the nightcap. Stanclift went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, while Chloe Hall was 3-for-4. Livi Abney, Wagner and Hoch each went 2-for-4, Hoch knocking in two runs.

“Overall, those were probably a couple of our best games. We had no errors and hit all the way through the lineup,” Free State coach Pam Pine said after her team won its fourth straight game.

Free State, 9-7 overall and 4-4 in the Sunflower League, will play SM East and SM North in single games Thursday at Johnson County fields.

Tennis

Topeka — Free State High singles players Keith Pipkin and Charles Guard finished first and second Tuesday, helping the Firebirds take third at the Topeka High Invitational.

Pipkin went 4-0 at No. 1 singles, winning the championship, 8-7 (5). At No. 2 singles, Guard was 3-1, finishing second. Jack Hull and Drew Schelar were 2-2, finishing fifth at No. 1 doubles; Stephen Donly and Zach Morgenstern placed fourth after going 2-2.

Soccer

Overland Park — Free State held defending Class 6A state champion Olathe East to two goals, but fell, 2-0, on Tuesday at the College Boulevard Athletic Complex.

FSHS coach Jason Pendleton cited Leah Williams, Emily Erb, Katelyn Anderson and Megan Hrenchir for their play.

“All in all, it was OK,” Pendleton said. “We competed well against a very good, athletic team. I hope we can continue to improve and get a positive result the next time out.”

The Firebirds (2-11-1) will play host to third-ranked Olathe North at 4 p.m. Thursday at FSHS on Senior Day.
