Baltimore ? The Toronto Blue Jays went 10 innings without a run before an unlikely hero put an end to the Baltimore Orioles’ eight-game winning streak.

Gregg Zaun snapped a tie with a two-run single in the 12th inning, and the Blue Jays received a strong performance from their bullpen in a 6-2 victory Monday night.

Zaun was locked in an 0-for-14 slump before delivering the key hit, a single up the middle that sent Baltimore to its first defeat since April 21. His skid included an 0-for-7 performance during a three-game series at Yankee Stadium.

“I’ve been a little frustrated,” Zaun said. “That was my first hit on the trip. I haven’t been feeling real comfortable. But when I picked up the bat, it felt good in my hands. I felt like I had an opportunity to do something.”

The Blue Jays, who held Baltimore without a hit over the final six innings, have won six of seven. They had lost six straight to the Orioles, including three in Toronto from April 22 to 24 that got Baltimore started on its eight-game run.

Although the Orioles came in with the second-best record in the majors, the smallest crowd in the 14-year history of Camden Yards (15,641) showed up on a chilly night.

Vernon Wells led off the 12th with a single off Todd Williams (3-1), who had allowed only one earned run in 12 innings. Wells went to third on a single by Corey Koskie before Shea Hillenbrand hit a grounder to shortstop, producing a rundown that retired Wells and left runners at second and third.

Williams then issued an intentional walk to Eric Hinske before Zaun broke a tie that had endured since the sixth inning.

Before Zaun’s hit, the Blue Jays were 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position. Reed Johnson added a two-run single off John Parrish to complete the scoring.

Scott Schoeneweis (1-1) struck out Larry Bigbie with the bases loaded and two outs in the 11th, and Miguel Batista worked a perfect 12th.

Sammy Sosa doubled, walked three times and scored a run for the Orioles. Miguel Tejada went 0-for-5, ending a run of four straight games with a home run.

Tigers 8, Red Sox 3

Detroit — Carlos Pena broke a tie with a two-run homer in the sixth inning and added a solo shot in the eighth to help Detroit beat Boston for its sixth victory in eight games. Boston dropped to 3-6 in its last nine games, with manager Terry Francona returning to the dugout after serving a three-game suspension for his role in the Red Sox’s bench-clearing brawls on April 24 in Tampa Bay. Tigers starter Jeremy Bonderman (4-2) allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings.

Yankees 6, Devil Rays 2

St. Petersburg, Fla. — Mike Mussina pitched seven solid innings, and Gary Sheffield went 3-for-4 with an RBI to help New York rebound from a miserable homestand and extend Tampa Bay’s losing streak to a season-high eight games. Rey Sanchez had a two-run single, and Bernie Williams and Jorge Posada also drove in runs for New York, which lost six of nine games at Yankee Stadium during a homestand that concluded Sunday with an ugly 8-6 loss to Toronto.

Rangers 3, Athletics 2

Oakland, Calif. — Kenny Rogers pitched eight shutout innings to improve to 21-4 in 41 starts in Oakland, and David Dellucci homered and scored twice for Texas. The 40-year-old Rogers (2-2) retired his first 14 batters, and finished with five strikeouts. He lost Sept. 16 at the Oakland Coliseum to end a stretch of 18 straight winning decisions in the stadium dating to a loss Aug. 7, 1994. Francisco Cordero pitched the ninth for his AL-leading ninth save in 11 opportunities.

Angels 5, Mariners 0

Seattle — Jarrod Washburn pitched four-hit ball into the eighth inning, and Los Angeles got two-run homers from Steve Finley and Garret Anderson. Making his sixth start of the season, Washburn (2-0) walked three and struck out five in 72/3 innings to lower his earned-run average to 2.72. He has allowed only one run in his last two starts, spanning 15 1/3 innings.
