Settlemier solid for KU

? Serena Settlemier singlehandedly made sure Kansas University’s softball squad kept its winning streak alive.

Settlemier struck out a career-high 14 batters and hit a two-run home run, leading the Jayhawks to a 3-0 victory Saturday over Texas Tech at Rocky Johnson Field. The win was KU’s seventh straight and improved the Jayhawks to 27-19 overall and 6-7 in the Big 12 Conference.

Settlemier (12-7) topped her previous career mark of 10 strikeouts, allowing just three hits and walking two in the shutout.

Heather Stanley and Elle Pottorf each chipped in two hits for the KU offense that posted nine hits.

KU scored first in the top of the third. Nicole Washburn, who reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second on a hit by Ashley Frazer and to third on a Tech throwing error. Stanley drove in Washburn with a single to left to give the Jayhawks a 1-0 lead.

Settlemier put KU up 3-0 with her two-run blast in the fourth after Destiny Frankenstein led off the inning with a double.

Texas Tech’s Erin Crawford (14-11) allowed six hits, struck out two and walked none in the loss.

KU will wrap up the series with Texas Tech (23-23, 3-14) at noon today.
