Nickerson student gets six months for bomb incidents

Teen pleads guilty to eight charges

? A Nickerson High School student who pleaded guilty in a case involving a series of explosive devices has been sentenced to six months in a boot camp.

Marcus Curran, 17, pleaded guilty Thursday in Reno County District Court, a day after a judge ruled he would be charged as an adult. He was charged with 12 counts and pleaded guilty to eight — four of arson, two of attempted arson and two of criminal use of explosives.

Several teachers who were targets of the explosive devices in January asked Judge Steven Becker to impose a harsh penalty on Curran.

“The incident at my house is still very traumatic to me,” math teacher Jennifer Beaird said tearfully. “The explosion was within two feet of my house and within three feet of my 5-year-old son.”

Another teacher, Paul Gion, told the judge: “When you live with two small children, you’re concerned for their safety. When you go out at 11 o’clock at night to find your mailbox blown over a hundred feet away with shrapnel on your neighbor’s front porch, it’s serious.”

The judge also lectured Curran after the teachers spoke.

“I think they gave you a good picture of how traumatic it can be when we’re talking about little children and infants and how easily they could’ve been injured or killed by your foolish, foolish conduct,” Becker said.

As part of the plea agreement worked out by Dist. Atty. Keith Schroeder and defense attorney Rick Roberts, Rice County Dist. Atty. Chris Oakley agreed to drop charges there. Convictions in both counties would have meant a mandatory prison term for Curran.

There were six explosions in Reno County and two in Rice County, Schroeder said.

A preliminary hearing for Garret Rempel and Jacob Unruh, also accused of involvement in the explosions, is scheduled for April 19.
