Kansas is back in California this weekend to participate in the Capital Classic in Sacramento.

The Jayhawks, who played in a tournament late last month in Palm Springs, will play two games today, two more Saturday and finish with another twinbill Sunday.

Kansas (14-8) will face three teams from the Big Ten (No. 25 Northwestern, Minnesota and Illinois), one from the Atlantic 10 (Rhode Island), a team from the Pacific Coast Conference (Sacramento State) and an independent (Utah Valley State).

KU will battle Minnesota and Rhode Island today, Northwestern and Illinois on Saturday and Utah Valley State and Sacramento State on Sunday. KU already has lost to Northwestern in Las Cruces, N.M., 7-1. The Jayhawks also have played Utah Valley State, winning, 5-0, in Las Cruces.

Shortstop Destiny Frankenstein leads KU in batting (.383) and home runs (six). Outfielder Ashley Goodrich is hitting .360. Second baseman Jessica Moppin has a .308 batting average and is tied for the team lead in RBIs with 14. Freshman catcher Elle Pottorf is right behind with a .306 batting average.

Junior right-hander Serena Settlemier (7-3) has emerged as the Jayhawks’ No. 1 starter after an arm injury limited her to just a few outings last season.

Freshman left-hander Christina Ross (5-3) has been impressive, pitching 532/3 innings and posting a team-best 1.57 earned-run average and 46 strikeouts.

Sophomore right-hander Kassie Humphreys (2-2) also has worked on the mound and has started three games at first base.

Kansas is scheduled to play host to Indiana State on Tuesday, travel to Southwest Missouri State on Wednesday, then open Big 12 Conference play the following weekend at Texas.
