California’s lead
To the editor:
I read the article in Tuesday’s Journal-World titled “Calif. ban on gay marriage ruled unconstitutional” with weary skepticism. I could just hear the conservatives howling about activist judges in decadent California. I expected to find nothing new, but one fact stood out: A 1948 California Supreme Court ruling made that state the first to legalize interracial marriage. Didn’t know it was ever illegal. Need I say more?
