Pistons’ win ‘a miracle’

Detroit goes 0-for-4th in 64-62 victory

? Unable to make a shot from the field in the fourth quarter, the Detroit Pistons relied on tough defense and six free throws to beat the Utah Jazz.

Richard Hamilton scored 15 points, and the Pistons overcome 0-for-15 shooting in the fourth quarter to beat the Jazz, 64-62, Sunday.

“It’s a miracle,” Pistons coach Larry Brown said. “We didn’t get anything accomplished against their zone, but we luck out and win the game.”

The futility wasn’t limited to the Pistons, however. It was the lowest-scoring game for each franchise, and the teams combined for an NBA-record 18 points in the final period, beating the 19 points by Miami and Toronto in the fourth quarter Feb. 2, 2004.

“That’s as ugly as it can get, but our defense held on long enough to win the game,” said Detroit’s Chauncey Billups, who scored just one point in the second half. “It was like a lid was on the basket. We got some good looks — we got some great looks — we just couldn’t knock them down.”

Detroit led 58-50 at the start of the fourth quarter, and its six free throws were enough to hold off the Jazz. Utah shot 4-for-20 in the fourth.

“We kind of shot ourselves in the foot, especially late in the game,” Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. “That’s just the way it goes sometimes.”

The teams’ 126 total points ranks as the sixth-lowest scoring game in NBA history. The league low for combined scoring is 119 points by Boston (62) and Milwaukee (57), on Feb. 27, 1955, at Providence, R.I.

Raptors 128, 76ers 110

The Raptors, 21-for-34 from three-point range, broke the previous NBA mark of 19 three-pointers set by Atlanta in a victory on Dec. 17, 1996, in Dallas. The 76ers repeatedly left Marshall open in the corner as Marshall fell one short of breaking the record set by Kobe Bryant for the Los Angeles Lakers against Seattle on Jan. 7, 2003.

SuperSonics 90, Knicks 80

New York — Rashard Lewis put Seattle ahead for good on a three-pointer with 2:41 left, and the Sonics became the first visiting team to win at Madison Square Garden in more than a month. Lewis scored 23 points, Ray Allen had 17 and Antonio Daniels 11 for the Sonics.

Nets 98, Magic 82

Orlando, Fla. — Vince Carter scored 33 points, and Jacque Vaughn added 22 to help New Jersey beat Orlando. The Nets took advantage of sloppy ballhandling by the Magic in the second half to win for just the second time in six games.

Celtics 105, Wizards 101

Boston — Ricky Davis converted a three-point play with 21.1 left, and Boston overcame a 10-point deficit to improve to 7-1 since trading for Antoine Walker. Paul Pierce scored 20.
