The annual Friends of the Lawrence Public Library book sale will be March 31 through April 9. The library needs volunteers to help with the sale of thousands of books, CDs and records. The sale helps the library raise money and buy special books and equipment, finance literacy events and help special programs. This year, a special sale tent will be featured, and a team of volunteers is being assembled to raise the sale tent and take it down after the sale’s completion. The tent will be assembled from 7:30 a.m. to noon March 29. The tent will be disassembled from 7:30 a.m. to noon April 5. Volunteers for this project should be skilled with basic tool use.

Immediate volunteer needs

• The Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center’s Compeer Program matches people with volunteers who can be a supportive friend. Compeer friends are people receiving help at the Bert Nash Center who would benefit from supportive friendship. Volunteers and their Compeer friends may enjoy talking, going for coffee or a movie, or other recreational activities together. For more information, contact Julie Trowbridge, 830-1858.
• The Disabled American Veterans organization of Lawrence needs more volunteer drivers to transport veterans to medical appointments during the week. Volunteers may drive once a week or more frequently, if available. Most medical trips are to Topeka, Leavenworth or Kansas City and back. Volunteers will always wait at the medical office during the veteran’s appointment. Training will be provided. Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license and will need to have a physical health exam, paid for by the D.A.V. • Epilepsy Foundation of Kansas & Western Missouri needs volunteers for its 12th Annual Camp Shing, which will be June 10-12 in Linwood for children ages 6-17 diagnosed with epilepsy seizure disorder. Volunteers must demonstrate a willingness to work together as a team and be safety-conscious individuals. A background working with kids or young adults may be helpful but is not required. Special skills such as music, group recreational activities or crafts also are helpful. A criminal and child abuse background check is conducted on all volunteers, and volunteers will receive training. For more information, contact Giovanna Proctor at (913) 661-5465.
• The Salvation Army needs volunteers to assist with its shelter services seven nights a week. Volunteers are needed to assist with hot meal preparation and serving meals to shelter clients. Volunteers also can help with checking in clients as they arrive to stay in the overnight shelter, particularly during the busy check-in hours of 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. For more information or to volunteer, call Vivian on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 843-4188.
