Dinner honors newly crowned queen

She plays lacrosse and soccer, teaches dance classes, speaks two foreign languages, and April Del Campo now wears the crown as this year’s Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day queen.

Del Campo was honored during Sunday night’s coronation ceremony and dinner at The Flamingo Club, 501 N. Ninth St. She was one of six queen candidates who have spent the past few months helping the St. Patrick’s Day Committee.

“I had a wonderful time this year,” Del Campo, a 22-year-old Kansas University junior, said after the coronation.

Queen coordinator Kaci Love said it was a difficult choice for the committee. Roger Browning, committee executive chairman, agreed.

“These are six of the hardest-working and loveliest girls we’ve had in a long time,” Browning said.

About 125 people attended the coronation and dinner.

Del Campo will ride in Thursday’s St. Patrick’s Day downtown parade, which starts at 1 p.m. Former Kansas University football coach Don Fambrough, who attended the dinner, will be this year’s parade grand marshal.

The other queen candidates were Alicia Ellingson, 24; Aly Scaletty, 22; Sara Anne Sowyer, 22; Nichole Weatherwax, 23; and Erin Harmon, 24.

This year’s St. Patrick’s Day activities benefited The Shelter Inc. and Lawrence Youth Football Inc. An announcement later this month will reveal how much was raised for the two entities.
