School finance countdown

37 days: The state Supreme Court has given lawmakers until April 12 to produce a constitutional school finance plan.

CDBG question

U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., and U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., spoke in Topeka to a session of legislative economic committees and were questioned about President Bush’s proposed 35 percent cut to the Community Development Block Grant program, which has been a major source of funding for programs that help low-income residents.

Brownback said the current formula that returns CDBG funds to Kansas hadn’t been favorable to the state. “I welcome an opportunity to rework this formula,” he said. Moran said he realized the CDBG program has been popular in Kansas and added, “The president’s budget is only a starting point.”
