State regulators rule against SBC deregulations

? State regulators Monday rejected most of SBC Communications Inc.’s deregulation request.

The move keeps price controls over most major telephone services offered by SBC, including basic residential and business phone service, and individual price controls over individual extras, such as caller ID.

The Kansas Corporation Commission decided the issue earlier this month, but filed its official order Monday.

SBC requested deregulation in Topeka, Kansas City, Kan., and Wichita.

State law says former monopolies such as SBC can petition for deregulation if they can prove that local markets have become competitive, and that such competition is sustainable.

SBC argued that competition would keep prices competitive and help consumers.

But a majority of the KCC felt that SBC did not face adequate competition in most areas.
