Hot, steamy conditions continue

Crank up the air conditioner, turn on a fan and get an ice-cold drink — hot, sunny conditions return to Lawrence this afternoon.

“We’re still baking here in most of Kansas,” said Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist. “By the time we hit the afternoon, we should see highs in the mid to upper 90s.”

At 8:15 a.m., the temperature was 75, with southerly 7-mph winds and 74 percent humidity. The temperature will reach 85 by noon and climb to a high of 94 by 4 p.m.

The hot spot in Kansas will 98 in Goodland for today.

“It’s going to be very hot and very muggy today, so take some precautions if you’re working outdoors,” Reith said. He suggested drinking water or sports drinks instead of carbonated drinks, taking frequent breaks and wearing light clothing.

As hot as it is today, Friday’s temperatures will be even hotter, he said. Temperatures will start in the morning at 70, with the possibility of haze and fog. Then Lawrence’s temperature will climb to a high of 96, he said.

“Parts of western and central Kansas will be approaching triple digits tomorrow,” Reith said.

Saturday’s morning low will start out at 68 and climb to a high of 93 by Saturday afternoon, he said.
