First Baptist Church marks 150th anniversary

First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive, is celebrating its 150th anniversary during 2005, centering on the theme “Our 150th Year: A Time to Reflect, Rejoice, Renew.”

A homecoming reunion weekend is planned Friday through Sunday to bring the congregation together with the Lawrence community and former members and friends.

The reunion will specifically honor the pioneer founders of First Baptist Church, which is one of the oldest continuously active congregations in Lawrence.

The church’s actual anniversary is June 25, 1855.

An open house will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

Starting at 4 p.m. Saturday, there will be games for all ages (including traditional picnic games, a moon walk and dunk tank), demonstrations of pioneer crafts (such as woodworking) and viewing of antiques.

From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, there will be entertainment by the Midday Ramblers, a local bluegrass band. (Visit their Web site at www.middayramblers.com for more information and a sample of their music.)

There will be an early worship service from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by Sunday school from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and a worship service from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

A traditional potluck dinner will start at noon Sunday, with meat, drink and dessert provided. A brief program will follow to recognize former staff.

All events, except for a Saturday dinner, are free and open to the public.
