Students earn medals in history competition

Three Lawrence students on Thursday received honors at the National History Day national competition at the University of Maryland, College Park.

This year’s theme was Communication in History: The Key to Understanding.

Local finalists are:

¢ Lawrence High student Laura Parkinson, for “Nellie Bly: ‘Bring Da Broom Along’,” Senior Individual Performance. Her teacher is Michael Ortmann.

¢ Central Junior High student Timmia Hearn Feldman, for “Unlocking the Door: Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan’s Key to Communication,” Senior Individual Performance. Her teacher is Dari Hilbert.

¢ Lawrence High student Samuel Huneke, for “The Nuremberg Rallies: Communication of the Nazi Order,” Senior Individual Documentary. His teacher is Michael Ortmann.

Students were challenged to demonstrate their knowledge about the historical context of their topic and relate the topic to the theme.

Kansas History Day is administered by the Kansas State Historical Society with additional support from the Eisenhower Foundation.
