Phoenix ? Angel Berroa’s hustle gave Kansas City its first lead. His 12th-inning triple provided an exclamation point.

Berroa’s line drive down the right-field line scored the last two of Kansas City’s six runs in the inning, and the Royals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 9-4, Sunday.

Ryan Jensen (3-1) couldn’t hold one-run leads in either the 10th or 11th, but stayed in to finish the game. The Royals have won three of four series since Buddy Bell became manager.

“We kept battling,” Bell said. “They tied it up there, and we finally just put it away.”

Berroa had given the Royals a 2-1 lead in the 10th when he scored from second while the Diamondbacks were trying to turn a double play.

“The ball wasn’t hit too hard,” Berroa said. “I just made up my mind to keep going. Maybe they’ll make a bad throw or something. It was a tie game and one out. If they don’t get the double play, I want to beat the throw.”

Ruben Gotay walked to lead off the 12th against Javier Lopez (1-1), the Diamondbacks’ fourth pitcher, and went to second on a groundout. Greg Aquino, activated from 60-day disabled list before the game, hit Emil Brown with a pitch and struck out Jensen on a foul bunt before surrendering Mark Teahen’s broken-bat bloop single to right.

Brown later scored on a balk to make it 5-3, and Teahen scored on Tony Graffanino’s sharp single to center. Alberto Castillo walked, and Graffanino went to third when catcher Kelly Stinnett threw the ball into center field.

David DeJesus singled, scoring Graffanino to make it 7-3, and Berroa hit his triple to cap the inning.

Tony Clark homered in the bottom of the 12th.

Aquino allowed five runs on three hits with a walk, a strikeout and a hit batter in his first appearance since opening day.

“I didn’t want to use Aquino in that situation, but (Matt) Herges really wasn’t available, and (Claudio) Vargas was our long guy,” Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. “If you go down to him then you’re on your last pitcher, so we didn’t really have a choice.”

The Diamondbacks used three consecutive two-out hits off Royals starter D.J. Carrasco to take the lead in the fourth. Shawn Green singled and moved to third on Clayton’s single to center. Chris Snyder followed with a line drive into right, scoring Green for a 1-0 Arizona lead.

Carrasco allowed six hits over six innings with one intentional walk and three strikeouts.

“We’ve been getting good pitching from all of our starters,” Bell said.

The Royals tied it in the seventh against Arizona starter Brandon Webb.

Teahen singled, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on Castillo’s single to center. Castillo went to third on consecutive wild pitches but Webb struck out DeJesus to end the inning.

Webb struck out five, walked two and recorded 15 groundball outs.

“It was frustrating to waste a terrific effort by Webb,” Clark said. “He did an outstanding job and unfortunately we were unable to get him a couple more runs in the course of the game.”

Notes: The game was Kansas City’s longest of the season. … Craig Counsell matched his career high for home runs with four, set in 2001. … To make room for Aquino, the Diamondbacks and optioned RHP Edgar Gonzalez to Triple-A Tucson. Aquino had been on the DL since appearing in the season opener and experiencing pain in his right elbow. Gonzalez had pitched in one game since his recall Thursday, allowing four runs on two hits and a walk in one-third of an inning for a 108.00 ERA. … Arizona moved RHP Brandon Lyon to the 60-day DL from the 15-day DL. Lyon lead the NL in saves early in the season before he was sidelined since May 13 with a strained right elbow.
