Southeast Area Plan to be discussed

Lawrence City Commission agenda highlights ¢ 6:35 p.m. Tuesday ¢ City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets ¢ Sunflower Broadband Channel 25 ¢ Meeting documents online at www.lawrenceks.org

Bottom line

City commissioners will have a public hearing on the proposed Southeast Area Plan, which spells out future land uses for about 1,200 acres of property near the O’Connell Road and Kansas Highway 10 area.

Background

Lawrence-Douglas County Planning commissioners in February approved the plan, which would allow for about 680 acres of industrial property in the area. But planning commissioners were sharply divided, approving the plan on a 5-4 vote. The plan has been controversial because several residents in the area have said that it allows too much industrial development. A majority of Douglas County commissioners have agreed. Much of the area covered in the plan is outside the city limits, so county commissioners need to approve the plan for it to be effective. City commissioners on Tuesday could approve the plan or send it back to planning commissioners for more review.
