Large hail and gale-force winds pounded Lawrence this afternoon as the leading edge of a line of thunderstorms roared through the area, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. Because of the heavy rains, Lawrence is under a flood warning through 1:45 a.m. Monday.

“We’ve had very gusty winds . . . There’s a lot of rain coming down,” Schack said. “We haven’t seen anything tornadic with these storms.”

Hail as large as one-inch in diameter was reported throughout Douglas County, as well as heavy rains and 60- to 70-mph winds, Schack said.

The flood warning is in effect through 1:45 a.m. for Douglas, Shawnee, Jefferson, Franklin and Osage counties. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue this evening and overnight, causing continued flooding of creeks, streams, highways and underpasses. The National Weather Service urges drivers to not try to drive where water covers the road.

Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 11 p.m.

Although the leading edge of the thunderstorm has passed through the Lawrence area, a tornado watch will last through 10 p.m. in Douglas, Jefferson, Franklin and Shawnee counties.
