Dr. Keith Van Horn has joined Drs. Wiklund, Peterson and Krische in Lawrence. Van Horn earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology at Kansas University in 2001. He earned his dental degree in May from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

¢ Billy Brumley has been named an associate financial adviser with the Lawrence office of American Express Financial Advisors, 3200 Mesa Way. Brumley previously was employed by Del Monte Foods as an ingredient operator. As an adviser, Brumley will consult with clients on a one-to-one basis to help them identify their financial goals and determine a course of action.

¢ Thomas Clements and Kevin Hawker have joined Midland Hospice Care.

Clements, medical director at Midland, oversees patient care and coordinates care with attending physicians. He has several years of experience in public health administration and more than 26 years of active Army service. He received his doctorate of medicine from the University of Kentucky.

Hawker assists Clements in overseeing patient care and the Midland Crossroads Palliative Care Program. He received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree from Loyola University. He is a board certified adult nurse practitioner and AIDS-certified registered nurse. He previously served as staff nurse, case manager and patient care coordinator at the Palliative Care Center of the North Shore in Evanston, Ill.

¢ Aquila recently recognized Chris Braden, natural gas operations technician in Lawrence, and Ben Calderon, natural gas meter reader in Lawrence, for their years of service with the Kansas City, Mo.-based company. Braden has been with the company for 15 years, having started in Lawrence in 1990 as a pipe fitter. Calderon started in 2000 as a meter reader in Dodge City.

¢ Kathy Bruner, chairwoman of Clean Air Lawrence, recently attended the National Conference on Tobacco or Health in Chicago along with more than 3,000 other delegates. Attendees are working to eliminate indoor smoking in communities.

Lawrence was recognized as having enacted one of the most comprehensive ordinances in the country.

The conference’s topics included information on smoking-related health complications for blacks and Native Americans and tobacco companies’ marketing and other programs.

¢ Englewood Florist Inc. was featured on the cover of the May issue of FTD Newsletter, a national publication for member florists. Englewood Florist received recognition for increasing its floral orders to other cities and winning first place in the Kansas regional contest. Owners are Cary Engle and Susan Engle.

¢ Linda Trotter, a Lawrence Realtor, has received the certified residential specialist designation by the Council of Residential Specialists, an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors.

Realtors receive the CRS designation after completing advanced courses and demonstrating professional expertise in residential real estate. There are 35,000 Realtors in the United States who have the CRS credential.

Trotter is a sales associate with Coldwell Banker McGrew Real Estate in Lawrence.

¢ KCPT has hired Victor Hogstrom, president and chief executive officer of the Public Broadcasting Service station in Chattanooga, Tenn., as its new president and CEO.

Hogstrom will succeed President/CEO William T. Reed, who is retiring at the end of June after 13 years with KCPT, the Kansas City, Mo.-based PBS station.

Hogstrom has been president and general manager of Emmy-winning WTCI-TV45 in Chattanooga since 1991.

KCPT serves 853,000 television households and provides lifelong learning opportunities for children and adults in homes, classrooms and child-care centers across Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. The nonprofit, community-owned station has 69 employees and an operating budget of about $7 million.

Coming events

Maria Meyers, of KCSourceLink, will be the guest speaker at the Lawrence Technology Assn. meeting at 11:45 a.m. Thursday at Hereford House, 4931 W. Sixth St.

KCSourceLink connects small businesses to a network of business-building resource providers in the Kansas City region. Meyers joined KCSourceLink as its first director in June 2003, and the operation now connects entrepreneurs with nearly 100 resource organizations in the K.C. region.

¢ Housing and Credit Counseling Inc. is offering three workshops this month in Topeka to discuss residential financial issues:

¢ Homebuyer 101 Workshop, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 25 at the Topeka Public Library, 1515 S.W. 10th St. in Topeka. Topics will include loan products and how the purchasing process works. The event is sponsored by Capitol Federal Savings, US Bank and the Topeka Area Association of Realtors Inc.

¢ Renters Workshop, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 27 at 1195 S.W. Buchanan in Topeka. Topics will include tenants’ rights and responsibilities, security deposits, evictions, entry, repairs and leases.

¢ Reverse Mortgages, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 30 at 1195 Buchanan in Topeka. The class, offered by Consumer Credit Counseling, which is a division of House and Credit Counseling, will review how reverse mortgages work and what consumers should consider before applying for one.

¢ The Natural Resources Conservation Service is having a Technical Service Provider Information forum from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 20 at the NRCS conference center in Salina.

Harold Klaege, state conservationist, said the purpose of the forum “is to listen to the concerns of the TSPs, landowners and others so that we have the best technical services readily available.”
