Business section adding consumer, investment news

Beginning Monday, the Lawrence Journal-World’s Business section is making room for several new consumer-oriented and investment features designed to help readers make better-informed decisions about their money.

Among the enhancements:

¢ “Kate and Dale Talk Jobs,” a workplace and careers column by Kate Wendleton and Dale Dauten, will appear Mondays. Wendleton has been a career coach since 1978, and Dauten is a former business and marketing executive.

¢ “The Color of Money,” a personal finance column by Michelle Singletary of the Washington Post, returns to the Journal-World on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Singletary is the author of “7 Money Mantras for a Richer Life: How to Live Well with the Money You Have,” published by Random House, and is a personal finance commentator for National Public Radio’s “Day to Day” afternoon program.

¢ “From Consumer Reports,” a selection of articles from Consumers Union, will appear Wednesdays. Consumers Union is the independent, nonprofit that has been working to test products, inform the public and protect consumers for nearly 70 years.

¢ “About Real Estate,” a column by David W. Myers, will appear Fridays. Myers offers tips for buying, selling and financing properties as well as understanding legal issues, property taxes, home-improvement projects and insurance coverage.

¢ “Next Steps,” a column by Jan Warner and Jan Collins, will appear Saturdays. The question-and-answer column provides insights into the legal, financial and practical issues of aging and retirement. Warner is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys; Collins is editor of the Business and Economic Review and is a special correspondent for The Economist.

Meanwhile, the Journal-World is streamlining its traditional stock listings, both weekdays and Sunday.

Tuesdays through Fridays, stocks and 401(k)s of local interest will continue to be published. The “Stock Market in Review” will no longer run.

Sundays will feature extended market listings, including an entire page of the week’s trading for stocks on the New York Stock Exchange, American Stock Exchange and Nasdaq National Market. There also will be an entire page of mutual funds.
