Nineteen Scouts and adult advisers from Troop 59, chartered to the First Presbyterian Church of Lawrence, completed a week of high adventure backpacking on Isle Royale, an island national park on Lake Superior. Isle Royale is an isolated wilderness.

The Scouts and leaders were divided into two crews.

One crew, led by Ryan King, hiked about 30 miles. Members were Henry Chapman, Ryan Marienau, John Wagner, Derek Kappelman, Jonathan Gabler and John Frederickson. They were accompanied by adult leaders Phil Wrigley, Tony Marienau and Keith Wood. A highlight was when a wolf walked through a clearing where they were eating lunch.

The second crew, which hiked 36 miles, was led by Ricky Bellinger. Other members were Derrick Weishaar, Erik Yowell, Chip Allen and Eli Hodge. They were accompanied by adult advisers Gary Weishaar, Ben Gleeson, Reid Crowe and Greg Yowell.

While on the trip, the group visited the Maritime Visitor Center and Museum at Duluth, Minn., where they heard a presentation on Lake Superior lighthouses and shipwrecks around Isle Royale. They also toured Split Rock Lighthouse along the Minnesota shoreline. After hiking, the group went to Thunder Bay, Canada, and spent the night in a bunkhouse and received a guided tour of historic Fort William, a restored fur trading post.
