Chamber gearing up for Lake Challenge

It’s not too late to enter a cardboard boat in the second Lawrence Chamber of Commerce “Lake Challenge,” set for Aug. 20 at Clinton Lake.

Doug Gaumer, of Intrust Bank, and Laura Hiebert-Carbrey, of Dale Willey Automotive, are co-chairs for the event, which drew 33 boats, including the one above being paddled by Phil Struble, last year.

“It’s the most fun you can legally have with big sheets of cardboard, some paint and a gallon of glue,” Hiebert-Carbrey said.

Participation in the Lake Challenge is open to any business, organization or informal group. Ten standard cardboard sheets – each measuring 48 by 96 inches – are available at no charge to each entry, courtesy of Lawrence Paper Co.

The entry fee is $400 per boat, with funding provided by sponsors for up to seven youth group boats. Proceeds from the Lake Challenge benefit Leadership Lawrence, a program of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

Festivities will begin at 9 a.m. There will be live music at the Clinton Lake Marina, ticketed activities for children and a parade of participating boats. The races will begin at 11:15 a.m. and continue for about two hours. The awards ceremony will follow.
