Local artist featured in Red Barn Studio

A Lindsborg studio has announced plans to have Linda Baranski as its artist in residence from Monday through Aug. 7.

Baranski, of Lawrence, works with mosaics and abstract expressionist painting. She will offer a monotype workshop from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and a mosaic workshop titled “You Can Cover Anything in Mosaic” from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

KU design professors work on science project

Kansas University design professors are part of a collaborative group of KU physicists, designers, educators and writers who recently received a nearly $200,000 grant from the Kansas National Science Foundation EPSC (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) to execute an interactive multimedia education project, “Quarked! Adventures in the Subatomic Universe.”

The Quarked Project, led by Alice Bean, professor of physics and astronomy, will help develop methodologies for presenting abstract science topics to children. The project is designed to help children ages 7-12 understand the world of science, specifically the world of subatomic physics.

Andrea Herstowski, assistant professor of design, and Richard Varney, associate professor of design, are working on the project as well.

The Quarked Project team plans to unveil the outreach program to the public in spring 2006.

Scholarship awarded

Lawrence Community Theatre has announced its annual volunteer scholarship winner.

Andy Brown, of Lawrence, is the recipient of the Hector and Frances Evans Lawrence Community Theatre College Scholarship.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to one individual who is a full-time student attending a two- or four-year college and also volunteers at least 100 hours at the community theater. It is given by Marti and Michael Butell, in honor of Marti Butell’s parents.

Brown will attend Washburn University in the fall.

School of Fine Arts announces new faculty

The KU Department of Design announces the appointment of two new faculty members who will join the department.

Michael Eckersley has been named professor of interaction design. He earned a bachelor’s degree of art at Weber State University, a Master of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis and a doctorate in design education/cognitive science at Ball State University. He is currently a principal at HumanCentered, a design research and planning consultancy in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Mahbub Rashid will be an associate professor of interior design. He earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, his master’s degree in architecture studies from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his doctorate in architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology. For the past few years, he worked as research scientist at Georgia Tech’s College of Architecture.
