Garden City takes no action on Sunday liquor

? With liquor store operators voicing opposition, the City Commission took no action this week on a proposal to allow liquor sales in Garden City on Sundays.

Hutchinson-based Dillons Food Stores, which sells beer, had asked the commission to consider Sunday sales. Opponents, most of them liquor store operators, spoke against the change at a meeting on Tuesday, and no one appeared in support.

“We’re going to kind of leave it as is unless we see a lot of public comment for it,” Commissioner David Crase said.

Assistant City Manager Matt Allen said operators of five local liquor stores expressed opposition to the change at Tuesday’s meeting, primarily because Sunday is their one free day.
