The 103-degree heat Saturday failed to deter foot traffic and those ducking in and out of air-conditioned Lawrence shops on Massachusetts Street and other commercial spots.

But the hottest weekend of the year so far did keep many people confined to their homes as they obeyed a heat advisory from the National Weather Service that remains in effect at least until tonight and could be extended depending on the arrival of a front expected late Monday, said George Phillips, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

While Phillips said the temperature reached 103 degrees Saturday in Lawrence, he anticipated temperatures above the century mark could last until Tuesday when rain is in the forecast.

Many fought Saturday’s scorching heat with fun at the Outdoor Aquatic Center. Others exercised and braved the hottest part of Saturday.

Three remained active at 3:30 p.m. at Veterans Park. Mike Meyer, 20, while shooting the basketball, shrugged off the heat as common for Kansas summers.

“It’s pretty hot. We must be the three craziest people in Lawrence right now,” he said, pointing to the two tennis players in the park.

But Meyer acknowledged he would soon return to the cool spot on the floor of his house to recoup.

As youngsters splashed their moms in the shaded area of the wading pool at South Park, local ice cream and custard vendors welcomed the heat.

“People like to come in and buy custard when it’s this hot,” said Ian McCafferty of The Cup on Saturday.

High temps caused very little medical trouble Saturday as Capt. Pat Karlin, of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical, said at 8:30 p.m. Saturday they handled only one call all day related to the heat and that person was not transported for medical help.

“It’s unbelievable with this heat, but we only had that one call,” Karlin said.
