Royals pitcher, skipper disciplined

Hernandez lands 10-game suspension; Bell to sit out game

? Kansas City pitcher Runelvys Hernandez was suspended for 10 games and fined an undisclosed amount Thursday, and manager Buddy Bell will have to sit out a game following a benches-clearing brawl last weekend at Detroit.

Tigers reliever Kyle Farnsworth was suspended for six games, and Detroit starter Jeremy Bonderman was penalized for five. Both pitchers were fined, as was Tigers shortstop Carlos Guillen.

Hernandez and Bell also were fined. The penalties were imposed by Bob Watson, baseball’s head disciplinarian.

Hernandez, whose beaning of Guillen touched off the brawl, will appeal the ruling and said he planned to start tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays. Farnsworth and Bonderman also plan to appeal.

Hernandez insisted that he wasn’t aiming at Guillen’s head and felt the penalty was severe.

“That’s too much,” he said. “I didn’t do it on purpose. I never hit anybody in the head.”

Hernandez and Bell were ejected following the fracas, as were Kansas City outfielder Emil Brown and catcher Alberto Castillo. Neither Brown nor Castillo was disciplined further, a fact that pleased Royals general manager Allard Baird.

“I think Bob Watson and his staff did a good job in evaluating that they were not aggressors,” Baird said. “They were trying to keep the peace.”

Guillen, Farnsworth and Bonderman were ejected. During the brawl, Farnsworth picked up and body-slammed Kansas City pitcher Jeremy Affeldt.

“I know I probably shouldn’t have done what I did, but I’ll have to live with it,” Bonderman said. “I’ve just got to go through the appeal process and see what happens.”

After drilling Guillen, Hernandez – who had hit two Detroit batters earlier in the game – threw down his glove as he and Guillen exchanged words. Guillen then charged the mound, and both benches and bullpens emptied.

The scuffle appeared to be over before more pushing and shoving led to Farnsworth’s hard tackle of Affeldt, likely the reason for his longer suspension.

“I expected (the suspension) to be something like that,” Farnsworth said. “I’ll just appeal and go from there.”

Bell thought the penalty on Hernandez was stiff.

“I really don’t have much of a reaction,” said Bell, who spoke with Watson earlier Thursday. “I knew from Bob’s reaction there would be suspensions. I think 10 games is a little steep.”

Bell has to turn over his managerial duties for one game today. It’s a mandatory punishment when pitchers and managers have been warned before a brawl.

Kansas City first baseman Mike Sweeney said he called Guillen earlier this week to try to patch things up between the teams. The Royals captain then put Hernandez on the phone with Guillen.

“We had a good talk,” Hernandez said. “He knew I didn’t do it on purpose. He said he was a little dazed after he got hit. We talked for a while.”
