There are times when a game, even a whole season, of baseball comes down to one swing of the bat.

Friday’s Rec Baseball league showdown between the Hurricanes and the Cobras at Youth Sports Inc. was one of those times, as the teams played to a dead heat through 4 1/2 innings.

Going into the bottom of the fifth and final inning with the score tied 12-12, the Hurricanes had a chance to end their season with a victory if someone crossed home plate.

“It’s the last game of the season, we’ve got to have this win,” said Heather Johanning, mother of Hurricanes player Austin Johanning, as the Hurricanes prepared to bat.

She got her wish.

In the decisive inning, Monte Scott Turner stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch single on a ground ball that got through the middle of the Cobras’ infield, scoring A.J. Frook and sealing the victory for the Hurricanes.

The game featured plenty of offensive fireworks, as both teams repeatedly made solid contact at the plate.

The Cobras started the scoring, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on runs by Zach Alderman and Andy Freeman.

The Hurricanes equalized in the bottom of the frame with Johanning and Matthew Hughes scoring runs. After hitting a blast to left field just foul, and making it halfway to third base before realizing it, Hughes returned to the batter’s box and swung at the next pitch, hitting it to almost the identical spot, but this time fair, for an RBI double.

The Cobras made some nice defensive stops in the inning with second baseman Alderman catching a line drive in the air and shortstop Legend Coonfield making a play on a ground ball.

The second inning provided some interesting moments. Cobras third baseman Carter Williams kept a ball in the infield with his foot. A ball also bounced off Cobras’ pitcher Brett Norton, but it went right to Coonfield, who threw it to Alderman for the force out at second.

But the highlight of the inning was a grand slam off the bat of Hughes, giving the Hurricanes a 7-2 lead into the third inning.

The Cobras tied the game in the top of third inning with Vinnie Barker hitting a triple and Owen McFadden, Brandon Thurman, Brandon Cooper and Coonfield each singling.

Cobras third baseman Barker made a nice play in the bottom of the inning. He backhanded a ground ball then showed good recognition of the situation by stepping on third base immediately for a force out.

The Cobras added four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead. Alderman had an inside-the-park home run with two men on, and Williams singled and scored a run.

Adam Hayes had an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the inning and the Hurricanes scored two to tie the game at 12.

The Hurricanes were able to keep the Cobras off the board in the next inning and after Turner’s heroics in the bottom of the inning the Hurricanes won 14-12.

Each coach credited the other team after the game.

“We knew this team was pretty good, so our guys were excited to play their best ball of the year,” Hurricanes coach Joel Hood said.

“For the last game of the season, it was a good game to finish on, win or lose,” Cobras coach Rich Freeman said.
