Spencer, six Jayhawks advance

? Lawrence native Nathaniel Spencer and six members of Kansas University’s golf team won in the first round of Kansas Amateur match play Thursday at Colbert Hills.

Spencer, who was a freshman last year at New Mexico Junior College, was the No. 4 seed after two days of stroke competition and defeated Philip Bartmus of Leawood, 4 and 2.

The KU golfers who won Thursday were Gary Woodland, Zach Pederson, Jason Sigler, Pete Krsnich, Tyler Docking and Barrett Martens. Krsnich knocked off Mark Bruder of Lawrence, 4 and 3.

Roy Edwards, KU’s assistant golf coach, wasn’t as fortunate. Edwards bowed to top-seeded Jesse Schulte of Hutchinson, 6 and 4. KU golfer Joey Mundy also fell when he was edged by Michael Crawford of Manhattan on 19 holes.

Lawrence’s Daniel Brumley also toppled Thursday, losing to No. 9 seed Ty Cline of Wichita, 2 and 1.
