Jayhawks Giles, Moody big gainers

C.J. Giles and Christian Moody are the unofficial weight-gain champions from last season to this season, according to official figures on Kansas University’s 2005-06 preseason men’s basketball roster.

Giles, a 6-foot-10 sophomore forward, weighs 235 pounds, up 15 from his freshman season. Moody, a 6-8 senior, is listed at at 220 pounds, up 15 pounds from last year.

Four other Jayhawks have experienced double-digit weight gains.

Russell Robinson, a 6-1 sophomore, weighs 196 pounds, up 11 from his listed weight of 185 a year ago.

Sasha Kaun, a 6-11 sophomore, enters at 246 pounds, up 11 pounds. Stephen Vinson, a 6-2 senior, weighs 195, up 10 from a year ago, and Jeremy Case, 6-1 from McAlester, Okla., weighs 170, up 10 from a year ago.

KU’s four newcomers have been awarded their jersey numbers: Mario Chalmers will wear No. 1, Rodrick Stewart No. 5, Micah Downs No. 23 and Julian Wright No. 30.

Jeff Hawkins is the only returning Jayhawk to change his roster number – from No. 1 to No. 55 for his senior season. He will be wearing the number of his roommate, Moulaye Niang, who wore 55 a year ago, but has left the team because of persistent back problems.
