Scott Dieker, Lawrence, made the president’s honor roll at Hutchinson Community College by receiving a 4.0 grade-point average.

¢ Martha Boatright, Lawrence, made the dean’s list at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

¢ Kristi McCune Bradley has been elected province director of chapters for Kappa Kappa Gamma fraternity. Bradley will work with collegiate chapters of Kappa Kappa Gamma in Missouri. Bradley, a Kansas State University graduate, has served Kappa Kappa Gamma most recently as a member of the Lawrence Alumnae Assn. where she continues to be an active member.

¢ The National Endowment for the Humanities recently announced that it gave a total of $575,000 in summer stipends to 115 U.S. scholars, including two from Kansas University. They are: Edith Clowes for “The Center at the Periphery: Eccentric Identity in Contemporary Russian Writing,” and Michael Zogry for “Playing or Praying? The Cherokee Anesto Ceremonial Complex.”

¢ Zachary Thorp, Lawrence, received a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry in December 2004 from the State University of New York at Genesseo.

¢ Jenilee Morrison, Lawrence, presented a research paper at William Jewell College’s fourth annual David Nelson Duke Undergraduate Colloquium Day. She gave a presentation called “Taxonomy of Endosymbiotic Bacteria in Paramecium Tetraurelia.” Morrison is the daughter of David and Pamela Morrison.

¢ Eric Southard, Lawrence, made the dean’s list at the Georgia Institute of Technology by receiving at least a 3.0 grade-point average.

¢ Sean Patton, Lawrence, recently graduated from the U.S. Military Academy. He received the “Outstanding Company Commander” trophy for the 2004-2005 academic year during graduation ceremonies in May at West Point. Patton was company commander in the third regiment of the U.S. Corp. of Cadets. Patton, a 2001, graduate of Lawrence High School, will be stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky., as a second lieutenant in the infantry. He is the son of Donna Patton-Bryant and Rick Bryant.

¢ Jay Wiesner, Nicholas Hirschey and Dustin Goodin, all of Lawrence, recently graduated from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. Wiesner, son of Kirk Wiesner and Terri Webster, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. Hirschey, son of Mark Hirschey and Christine Hauschel, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and mathematics. Goodin, son of Rebecca Goodin, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and philosophy.

¢ Sarah Hickert, Lawrence, made the dean’s list for the spring semester at Trinity University, San Antonio, by earning at least a 3.65 grade-point average.

¢ Brandi McClellan, a 2005 Baldwin High School graduate, received a $500 scholarship from the Kansas Restaurant and Hospitality Assn. She plans to attend Johnson County Community College in the fall.

¢ David and Jennifer Bruner Mier, Erie, Colo., announce the birth of their daughter, Anna Katherine Mier, born June 18, 2005, at Adventist Hospital in Lewisville, Colo. Grandparents are Ron and Mary Mier, Lawrence, and Dr. Steve and Kathy Bruner, Lawrence. Great-grandparents are Bill and Katherine O’Connor, Fairway, and Jo Smith, Denver.

¢ Chris and Kristen Hase, Pratt, announce the birth of their son, Ian Barrett Hase, born June 24, 2005, at Pratt Regional Medical Center. Grandparents are Mary and Dale Mitchell, Baldwin, and Dale and Vicki Hase, Americus. Great-grandparents are Mary Gordon, Lawrence, and Luther and Vivian Hase, Emporia.

¢ The descendants of George and Katherine Abel will gather for the annual Abel family reunion and dinner at 12:30 p.m. July 24 at Nottingham Elementary School in Eudora. The remainder of the afternoon will be spent visiting, telling about past year’s events, family news and sharing pictures. Each family planning to attend is asked to bring a covered dish and photos to share.

¢ The Old West Lawrence Assn. Applause Committee has selected four property owners to be acknowledged for improvements to their homes. The honorees are:

¢ Belinda Ballard, 636 Ohio. She just moved in this spring and already she has added new plantings to the front yard and painted the house.

¢ Carla Rausch, 621 La. She revamped her front and backyard into a garden, which included replacing a dead tree.

¢ Jennifer McKnight, 701 Ala. She has a border of brightly colored flowers along the driveway. The brick sidewalk along Alabama Street recently was relaid, and a new bed on the south side of the property has been planted.

¢ Cindy and Tim Jensen, 800 Ala. They recently added a porch railing.

Signs have been placed in front of these properties and will remain in place until the end of August, when the final awards for the season will be announced.

¢ Sarah Nell Tacha, daughter of John and Deanell Tacha of Lawrence, received a Master of Arts degree in teaching from the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Wash. Sarah is a 1999 graduate of Free State High School and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Puget Sound in 2003.
