Around and about

Emma Berg, Lawrence, celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 16. Berg taught school in the area for many years before retiring. She and her husband, George, lived on a farm south of town and then moved to Lawrence. Emma has been involved with the Amateur Radio Club, the Eastern Star in Masonic Lodge No. 6 and the Military Affiliated Radio System. Emma was editor of the Sunflower Seeds newsletter for Kansas Army MARS for many years.

Lia DeRoin, Lawrence, has been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2004 quarter at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., by earning at least a 3.75 grade-point average. She is studying percussion performance in the School of Music.

The Free State High School debate team recently won first place at the Kansas State High School Activities Assn. regional debate tournament at Blue Valley North High School. The team finished with a record of nine wins and three losses. Members of the team were: Hannah Zingre, Elizabeth Lembeck, Nastassia Weber and Carol Liang. The debate coach is Steve Wood.

Oskaloosa High School announces students of the month for December. They are: Ali Houk and Tristan Rogers, sophomores, and Kate Glanville and Megan Reed, juniors. They received lunch at the Hereford House. They were honored for their contributions in the school and community.
