Jayhawk Invite on tap today

While cold temperatures persist, the Kansas University track and field team is looking for a winter warm-up in the Jayhawk Invitational.

The indoor meet allows the Jayhawks to compete in Anschutz Sports Pavilion while gearing up for the Big 12 Indoor Championships in February in Lincoln, Neb.

“We need to be at our best tomorrow to be at our best then,” Kansas coach Stanley Redwine said of today’s non-scored event, which will feature 35 schools. “It’s another competition and a step to compete in front of the home crowd.”

Track events are scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. with the women’s 3,000-meter run. The final track event, the men’s 3,200-meter relay, will begin at 8:15 p.m. Field events are slated to begin at 11 a.m. with the women’s weight throw, and they will conclude at 6 p.m. with the men’s shot put.

KU freshman pole vaulter Ekaterina Sultanova broke the school record earlier in the year at the Arkansas Invitational at Fayetteville, Ark., with an NCAA provisional qualifying jump of 13-71/2. The women’s pole vault will start at 2:30 p.m.

Senior Brooklyn Hann, who won the triple jump while tying her own school record with an NCAA provisional leap of 42-31/4, also will compete today.

On the men’s side, Sheldon Battle, a junior thrower, posted two NCAA provisional qualifying scores during last weekend’s KU-KSU-KU triangular meet in Manhattan, taking first place in the shot put (59-11/2) and second in the weight throw (67-71/2) with the second-longest toss in school history. Battle will begin his day with the men’s weight throw, which will start at 1:30 p.m.

Former Jayhawk speedster Leo Bookman will compete in the men’s 200-meter dash for training purposes as a member of Team Nike.
