Neighbors on alert after string of robberies

Residents of the Brook Creek Neighborhood in East Lawrence are watchful and worried following a string of at least 11 auto and home burglaries in recent days.

“We’re all calling and talking to each other, and we’re all watching out for each other. So that’s a good thing,” said Stacy Wall, who lives in the 1200 block of Prospect Avenue. “We don’t want to walk in and find somebody stealing our stuff.”

The Lawrence Police Department has recorded five home burglaries and six auto burglaries this month in the neighborhood.

“The increased criminal activity is being tracked by the crime analysis division, and the information has been distributed to all our officers,” said Sgt. Dan Ward, a Lawrence Police spokesman.

Items stolen include a flat-screen television taken sometime between 7:20 a.m. and 3:55 p.m. Jan. 19 from a home in the 1300 block of Prospect Avenue; 200 compact discs taken late Friday or early Saturday from a vehicle in the 1300 block of Brook Street; and home-entertainment items stolen between 11 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. Jan. 14 in a forced-entry burglary at a home in the 1400 block of Prospect Avenue.

Police are asking anyone with information about the any of the crimes to call the police department at 841-7210 or the Crime Stoppers hot line at 843-TIPS. Callers who provide information to the Crime Stoppers line may remain anonymous and might be eligible for a reward up to $1,000.
